What to Wear for Your Fall Family Photos in Upstate NY

One of the most common questions I get from families before their session is: “What should we wear?” Great news — it’s simpler than you think.

Start with a Color Palette

Pick 2-3 colors that complement each other and build everyone’s outfits around that palette. For fall sessions in Upstate NY, I love:

• Warm neutrals — cream, tan, camel, olive
• Earthy tones — rust, burgundy, mustard, sage green
• Classic combos — navy and cream, olive and white, burgundy and gray

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans. Instead, have everyone in the same color family but with different textures, patterns, and shades.

Think About the Location

Upstate NY in fall is absolutely gorgeous — think golden fields, colorful trees, and rustic landscapes. Earthy and warm tones photograph beautifully against this natural backdrop.

What to Avoid

• Neon colors or very bright patterns
• Large logos or graphic tees
• All-black outfits (they lose detail in photos)
• Brand new shoes (comfort matters!)
